Theory Test Pro

The theory test is divided into two parts:
1. A multiple-choice test comprising 50 multiple-choice questions covering all aspects of the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43.
2. A hazard perception test consisting of a series of video clips of actual road hazards that need to be identified. The pass mark is 44.

Practical Test

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions "show me tell me". The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

Prepare for your practical test

In your practical test you'll have about 40 minutes to demonstrate everything you've learnt in your driving lessons. Before you start the practical test, the examiner will ask you to read the number plate of a parked vehicle to check your eyesight, so remember to wear glasses or contact lenses if you need them.

You'll then be asked the “Tell Me” vehicle safety check question and the “Show Me” question whilst the car is moving. You'll get one fault if you give the wrong answer to one or both questions

During your test

The practical driving test is designed to show that you can drive competently and safely in a variety of situations. You'll be asked to do one of the four reversing manoeuvres you've practised with your instructor and possibly make an emergency stop.

In a 20 minute independent driving section you'll be expected to show that you can make safe decisions without prompting whilst following a Sat Nav or Road signs. Don't worry if you get lost, it's not a test of your navigation skills!!

To pass your practical test you need to complete the test with 15 or fewer driver faults, and no serious or dangerous faults.

Test Costs

A weekday practical test costs £62, and run from 07:13 to 15:29 depending on the day and time of year. Weekend and Bank Holiday tests cost £75

Don’t forget to budget for an lesson before your test and the cost of booking the instructor and car for the duration of the test.

What if I fail?

You can repeat your test without having to retake your theory and hazard perception tests as long as your theory certificate is still valid (it lasts for two years). Always ask for feedback from the examiner so you can see where you went wrong and work on those areas with your instructor.
