The First Steps

    Training to become a Driving Instructor take 3 steps following initial checks to ensure you are suitable as detailed below. When you Train to be an ADI – Approved Driving Instructor with Excel, We will be on hand to offer support and advice throughout your journey.

    Step One

    To undertake training you will need to meet certain criteria set out by the DVSA – Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency

    You must:

    • Be over 21 years of age
    • Have Held a Full Driving Licence for at least 3 years.

    If you meet the above criteria then you can start the process of becoming an ADI.


FIRST STEPS
Step Two

Criminal records check

You will need to apply for one even if you already have a DBS Certificate

You can apply online by clicking on the link below, after filling out your online application you must prove your Identity. This can be done at any Post Office that offers CRB/ID Verification Services and should cost £6.

You will need to provide 3 forms of Identification, these can be;

  • An up-to-date Drivers Licence
  • Valid Passport
  • Utility Bill that is less than 3 months old
  • Band or Mortgage statement less than 3 months old

All documents need to be originals and take a printout of your online application.

Step Three
    Once you’ve received your criminal records check, you can start the application process to become a Driving Instructor.

    To apply you must have:

    • Your Driving Licence Number
    • Any details of Driving Disqualifications, motoring or non-motoring offences
    Any details on court cases being brought against you.

    YOU MAY HAVE YOUR APPLICATION REFUSED IF the ADI Registrar feels you’re not suitableto become a Driving Instructor for any of the following reasons.

    • Banned From Driving
    • You have 6 or more points on your Licence
    • Convictions for non-motoring offences

    Your application is likely to be declined if you have any of the following
    Convicted of a Violent, Sexual, Financial or drug -related crime
    You are banned from working with Children
